Introduction:
I will therefore that men pray every where, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting. In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;
But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.
1 Timothy 2:8-10
The words are almost an afterthought, written in parentheses to the young pastor, Timothy. Scripture has much to say about godliness both for men and women. That truth speaks to the equality between the sexes. Not only men but, here in 1 Timothy 2, women can without a doubt be characterized by godliness.
1 Timothy 6:6 says that godliness with contentment is great gain. 2 Peter 1 says the Christian life is a long journey and the culmination for the believer, both men and women, is godliness and agape love.
A popular thought today is that women don’t need to worry so much about progressing in their Christian walk. After all, God loves us as we are! We are imperfect and prone to falling to be sure, but Scripture prescribes and describes what a Christian woman is supposed to be.
We will explore the complementarian view of womanhood, that although men and women were created on equal ground before the Lord in essence and quality, we have differing roles and responsibilities that complement each other.
It would be almost impossible to do justice to all references to women in the Bible. However, this study will seek to draw some general conclusions about the nature of womanhood through the study of relevant Scripture texts. We will then turn our attention to the application of those truths to our conduct in church.
This study of women’s roles in the Bible will not be limited to married women only, although many passages deal specifically with married women. Singleness is also addressed as a particular and special calling in Scripture. We will explore the implications for single women as they conduct their own lives under God and as they relate to other men, especially men in the church.
We will seek to gain both a wide picture of the proper view of women in Scripture and also some specific truths explicitly stated in Scripture. Doing this will help us apply those truths to our current relationships and situations.
Please join me as we open God’s Word together and open our hearts. With the Bible in our hands and the Holy Spirit in our hearts, let us seek to be …
Women Professing Godliness.
